Mitch Orr grew up in western Sydney and was drawn to cooking in high school. As a typically ravenous teenage boy, he enjoyed getting to eat what he cooked ... and being the only guy in the class was a bonus too!

He apprenticed in leading Sydney kitchens, getting a diverse culinary education from chefs such as Giovanni Pilu at Pilu at Freshwater and Martin Benn at Sepia.

In 2010, while at Sepia, he won the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide’s Josephine Pignolet Award for Young Chef of the Year, which gave him the opportunity to travel and work overseas. The highlight of this trip was a stage at Osteria Francescana (rated #4 in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list at the time).

Back in Sydney he opened Duke Bistro in Darlinghurst’s Flinders Inn, with Thomas Lim, where he picked up Time Out‘s Best New Talent and People’s Choice Award. He even made the shortlist for Cleo’s Bachelor of the Year!

In late 2014, he opened ACME with co-owners Andy Emerson, Cam Fairbairn and Ed Loveday – the name created from the initial of each owners first name. While the menu is built around Mitch’s excellent pasta, he describes it as a non-Italian restaurant and continues to have fun with both the names and ingredient combinations of his dishes.
